Cherry blossom 2027: plan Japan before the forecast exists

The first 2027 sakura forecasts land in mid-December and January. What the last three springs did in five cities, how to book a window, and where to go if you miss it.

Nobody can tell you when Japan’s cherry blossoms will open in 2027. Not yet. The first private forecasts arrive in mid-December and January, the official observations come when the trees do, and even the final forecasts in March move by a few days. What you can do now is read the last three springs, pick a window instead of a date, book rooms you can cancel, and know where to go if the petals have already dropped. We will update this piece when the 2027 forecasts publish.

When the 2027 cherry blossom forecast will come out

Three Japanese forecasters publish sakura predictions, and none of them is the government weather agency. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) records the dates after the fact but no longer forecasts them. The forecasts you see in headlines come from private companies, each on its own schedule.

Forecaster First 2026 forecast Then
Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) 18 Dec 2025 8 Jan, then roughly weekly into March
Weathernews 8 Jan 2026 28 Jan, then every two weeks, weekly from March
Japan Weather Association (JWA, tenki.jp) 29 Jan 2026 26 Feb, then every Wednesday from March

JMC’s December release was a month earlier than its usual January start, which it put down to a new long-range model. Whether it repeats that in December 2026 is the first thing to watch. Weathernews and JWA have kept to January for years. JWA’s data is what the Japan National Tourism Organization republishes in English, so if you want one forecast to follow, that is the one most people end up reading.

Treat every January number as a trend, not a date. Those forecasts are built from autumn temperatures and seasonal outlooks. In 2026 the January forecasts put Tokyo’s first bloom on 19 to 21 March and the tree opened on 19 March, which was a good year for the forecasters. In 2024 Tokyo did not open until 29 March, its latest since 2012, and nobody had that in January.

Bloom and full bloom are different dates, a week apart

Every forecast and every record is for one tree. JMA keeps a sample somei-yoshino tree in each city (Tokyo’s is at Yasukuni Shrine) and declares flowering, kaika, when five or six blossoms have opened on it. Full bloom, mankai, is declared when about 80% of the buds on the same tree are open. In the big cities full bloom comes about a week after opening, and the petals are falling about a week after that.

So a headline that says “Tokyo blooms 21 March” means the start of a fortnight, not the day to be there. The best viewing, when the trees look like the photos, is the stretch from a couple of days before full bloom to a few days after. If you book for the kaika date you will arrive to bare branches with a pink haze on them.

Read the right column

Japanese sites print 開花 (kaika, flowering) and 満開 (mankai, full bloom) as separate columns. English rewrites often collapse them into “bloom” and quietly mean the first one. When the number matters, find the full-bloom figure.

What Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo actually did

These are the Japan Meteorological Agency’s recorded dates for the sample tree in each city, not forecasts. The “normal” column is the 1991 to 2020 average the agency uses.

City 2024 bloom / full 2025 bloom / full 2026 bloom / full Normal bloom / full
Fukuoka 27 Mar / 2 Apr 25 Mar / 28 Mar 24 Mar / 3 Apr 22 Mar / 31 Mar
Osaka 30 Mar / 6 Apr 27 Mar / 4 Apr 26 Mar / 3 Apr 27 Mar / 4 Apr
Kyoto 29 Mar / 5 Apr 27 Mar / 5 Apr 23 Mar / 30 Mar 26 Mar / 4 Apr
Tokyo 29 Mar / 4 Apr 24 Mar / 30 Mar 19 Mar / 28 Mar 24 Mar / 31 Mar
Sapporo 18 Apr / 24 Apr 23 Apr / 27 Apr 18 Apr / 24 Apr 1 May / 6 May

Two things stand out. First, the spread. Across three springs, Tokyo’s full bloom landed anywhere from 28 March to 4 April, and Kyoto’s from 30 March to 5 April. A week either side of the average is normal, and 2024 shows a cold March can push the whole country late at once. Second, Sapporo has run two weeks ahead of its own long-term average three years running. If you are planning around Hokkaido, late April now looks more reliable than the first week of May.

How to book a trip for a date nobody knows

Pick the window, not the day. For Tokyo and Kyoto that window is roughly 25 March to 8 April. Full bloom has fallen inside it in each of the last three years and in the long-term average. If you can only afford one week, the first week of April has been the safer bet for Kyoto and the last days of March for Tokyo. If you can stretch to ten or twelve days in the country, you are covering most of the realistic range without doing anything clever.

Then book in a way you can unpick. Blossom season is the busiest fortnight of the year in Kyoto, so booking rooms in November is sensible, but book rates marked free cancellation and note the exact deadline on each one, because it varies by property. If the January forecast moves the window, you cancel the nights at the wrong end and rebook them at the right one. Flights are harder to move, which is another reason to buy the longer trip and shift which end of it you spend where.

Stack the order of cities to follow the front. Fukuoka and Kyushu open first, Osaka and Kyoto a few days later, Tokyo around the same time, then the north. A trip that starts in Kyushu or Kansai and ends in Tokyo gives the later cities a few more days to catch up to you. The reverse order, Tokyo first, is the common itinerary and the one that most often finds Kyoto not quite there yet.

Lez says

If you tell me your dates in March or April, I’ll draft the trip so Kyoto sits in the middle of the window and Tokyo at the end, with the first few nights on cancellable rates. When the January forecast comes out, say “update me on the blossoms” and I’ll check what it says against your days and tell you which city, if any, is worth swapping.

If the forecast moves against you: Kanazawa, Tohoku, Hakodate, Sapporo

The front keeps moving after Tokyo and Kyoto are done. If the big cities bloom early and you can’t change your flights, the fix is a train north, not a refund.

Kanazawa, on the Sea of Japan coast, averages a full bloom of 8 April, about a week behind Tokyo. Sendai averages 13 April. Japan Guide’s 2026 best-viewing dates ran to 12 to 18 April in Kitakami, 15 to 20 April in Kakunodate, 16 to 21 April at Hirosaki Castle, whose park holds about 2,600 trees and runs a festival from mid April into early May, 20 to 27 April in Hakodate and 21 to 28 April in Sapporo.

The long-term averages for Hokkaido are later still, 2 May for Hakodate and 6 May for Sapporo, but as the table above shows, Sapporo has been reaching full bloom around 24 to 27 April three years running. Plan for late April and you have a good chance; plan for early May and you may be a week late.

Late April runs into Golden Week

Japan’s spring holidays in 2027 fall on 29 April and 3 to 5 May. With the weekend of 1 and 2 May in between, much of the country takes the whole week off. Trains, hotels and viewpoints in Tohoku and Hokkaido fill with domestic travellers, and prices follow. If you are chasing late blossoms, aim for the week of 19 to 25 April rather than the holiday week.

Washington DC’s 2027 festival dates are already set

If “cherry blossom 2027” for you means the Tidal Basin, you have one thing Japan lacks: a festival with dates. The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from 20 March to 11 April 2027, with the Sakura Matsuri street festival on 10 and 11 April.

The trees don’t read the programme. The National Park Service defines peak bloom as the day 70% of the Yoshino blossoms around the Tidal Basin are open, and it recorded peak on 17 March in 2024, 28 March in 2025 and 26 March in 2026. The Park Service says forecasting peak bloom is close to impossible more than ten days out, and it makes its prediction at a press conference in early March. In 2026 that was 5 March, with a predicted 29 March to 1 April, and the trees came in three days early. Once peak arrives the blossoms stay for about seven to ten days, weather permitting. For DC, the practical advice is the same as for Tokyo: book the last ten days of March on a cancellable rate and watch the early March announcement.

Lez says

Planning both? DC’s peak and Tokyo’s full bloom have landed within a few days of each other three years running, so you can’t do both in one week. I’d put DC in the last week of March and Japan the week after, and start the Japan leg in Kyoto, where full bloom runs a day or two behind Tokyo.

What we will update, and when

This is a planning piece for a season that has no forecast yet. Here is what changes it. In mid-December, if JMC repeats its early release, we will add its first 2027 city dates. In January, Weathernews and JWA publish theirs and we will add them beside JMC’s. From March, JWA updates every Wednesday and the official JMA observations begin, and we will replace the forecasts with recorded dates as each city opens. The table of past years will not change, which is why it is the part to plan from.

If this is your first time in Japan, two weeks is the length that fits blossom season, and here is how long a first trip should be (from 4 Nov) if two weeks is more than you have. Our Tokyo guide covers the four-day shape of the city, and the Sapporo guide is for anyone heading north for the late season. Hotel taxes and the ¥3,000 departure tax are in the budget piece.

When will the cherry blossom 2027 Japan forecast be released?

The first private forecasts for 2026 came out on 18 December 2025 (Japan Meteorological Corporation), 8 January 2026 (Weathernews) and 29 January 2026 (Japan Weather Association). Expect the 2027 forecasts on a similar schedule, with weekly updates from March.

What are the cherry blossom 2027 dates for Tokyo?

Nobody knows yet. Tokyo’s sample tree reached full bloom on 4 April 2024, 30 March 2025 and 28 March 2026, and its long-term average is 31 March. Booking 25 March to 8 April covers the realistic range.

Is the cherry blossom season in Japan 2027 forecast map available?

Not until mid-December or January. The forecasters publish a map with their first release and update it through March. Until then, use the Japan Meteorological Agency’s recorded dates for the last few years as your map.

When is peak cherry blossom in DC for 2027?

The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs 20 March to 11 April 2027. Peak bloom at the Tidal Basin fell on 17 March 2024, 28 March 2025 and 26 March 2026, and the National Park Service announces its prediction in early March.
