Planning a Japan trip in 2027: dates, costs, routes
The 2027 dates, fees and trip lengths a first-time US visitor needs, with the right guide or article for each decision.
For a first trip from the US, plan 10 to 14 days, fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka, and choose your dates before anything else. Spring blossom and Golden Week crowd the same fortnight in different ways, and the cheap, quiet weeks sit either side of them. Nothing needs a visa or pre-travel approval in 2027, so the real decisions are when, how long and what it will cost.
Before you book: dates, length and entry rules
Start with the calendar, because it decides what rooms cost and which trains you can get. Cherry blossom has no 2027 forecast yet, and the first private ones arrive in mid-December and January. Booking a window, with cancellable rooms, is the honest answer until then. Golden Week is the opposite problem: the dates are fixed, and the fastest shinkansen runs with every seat reserved.
Length comes next. Ten days covers Tokyo, Kyoto and one more place with an empty arrival day. Fourteen adds a region, and it is the length most people wish they had taken. Paperwork is the easy part. US passport holders enter without a visa for short stays today, and Japan’s JESTA approval has no start date, with a target of fiscal 2028.
- Cherry blossom 2027: how to plan for a date nobody knows (from 4 Nov): when forecasts publish, what the last three springs did, and how to book a window.
- Golden Week 2027 in Japan (from 6 Nov): the holiday dates, what happens to trains and hotels, and what is good about the week.
- How many days in Japan for a first time (from 4 Nov): what 7, 10, 14 and 21 days each buy, and why jet lag rules out a short trip.
- JESTA: when Japan’s pre-travel approval starts (from 23 Nov): what is settled, what is not, and why nothing needs applying for in 2027.
Give me your dates and how many nights you have, and I’ll check them against Golden Week and the blossom window, then draft the split with the arrival day kept empty. If your dates land on 29 Apr to 5 May, I’ll keep you in one base for the week.
What it costs: flights, fees and trains
Two numbers are easy to miss. The departure tax tripled to ¥3,000 per person on 1 July 2026, and you never pay it at the airport because the airline builds it into the fare. Hotel taxes are per person per night, and Kyoto’s top band now reaches ¥10,000. Tokyo moves to 3% of the room rate for rooms over ¥13,000 per person from April 2027. Together the new charges added about ¥9,000 to a ten-night trip for two compared with a year earlier.
Flights are the larger bill. Google’s five-year data puts the lowest international fares about 89 days out, in a range of 50 to 133 days. For blossom or autumn colour, start watching six months ahead and plan to buy three to four months out. Trains are cheaper than you expect: on a Tokyo to Osaka line, tickets came to about ¥43,000 per person, against ¥80,000 for a 14-day Japan Rail Pass.
- Japan’s new fees and taxes in 2026, in yen: the departure tax, hotel tax by city, Himeji Castle, Mount Fuji and the tax-free shopping change, with a worked example.
- How far in advance to book flights (from 11 Nov): Google and Expedia figures by destination, with a section on Japan.
Picking your route and your cities
The classic first route is a line, not a loop. Four nights in Tokyo, one in Hakone, four in Kyoto with a day in Nara, two in Hiroshima and two in Osaka, flying home from Kansai. You unpack five times and never backtrack. The pass does not pay on that route, and the two-week article shows the sums.
Cities are where the days go. Tokyo works as one neighbourhood a day, over four days. Kyoto takes three full days if you start at dawn, because the big temples are at their best in the hour after they open. If you would rather see snow than blossom, Sapporo in February is the easiest winter trip to plan and the hardest to get a room for.
- Two weeks in Japan for a first trip (from 3 Nov): a 13-night route from Tokyo to Osaka, the rail pass sums and a January version.
- Tokyo in four days, planned so each day actually works: one neighbourhood a day, with lunch where you already are.
- Kyoto in 3 days, timed around the crowds (from 6 Nov): one side of the city a day, starting with the temples that open at 06:00.
- Sapporo in February, the Snow Festival without the scrum: the 2027 dates, where to stay and a five-day plan.
A line route trades depth for ease. Four nights in Tokyo is short, and you will leave with a list for a second trip. That is the right trade on a first visit, but if Tokyo is the whole reason you are going, give it the days.
Choosing your season
There is no bad month, only a trade between crowds, price and weather. Late March to mid April is blossom season and the busiest fortnight of the year in Kyoto. Golden Week follows, with about 24 million Japanese travelling in the 2026 edition and Kyoto hotels averaging ¥48,900 a night. October and November are the quieter twin, with clear skies and maples turning, and Tokyo and Kyoto in January average highs near 9 to 10 °C with little rain.
If blossom is the point, chase the front north instead of the forecast. Kanazawa averages about a week behind Tokyo, and Sapporo has reached full bloom in late April three years running. Aim for 19 to 25 April rather than the holiday week.
Before the trip: a short checklist
Do these in order. Each one is covered in the pieces above.
Blossom, Golden Week or autumn, then book cancellable rooms for the fixed nights.
Add departure tax, hotel tax by city and any castle or mountain fees before you set the budget.
Buy three to four months ahead for blossom or autumn colour.
Shinkansen seats go on sale at 10:00 Japan time one month before travel.
That is the order that saves money: the fixed costs first, the flight inside its cheap window, the trains last.
How many days do I need in Japan for a first trip?
Ten to fourteen days. Ten covers Tokyo, Kyoto and a third stop, and fourteen adds a region such as Hiroshima. Seven days works for one base and a day trip.
Do US citizens need a visa or JESTA for Japan in 2027?
No. US passport holders can enter for short tourism stays without a visa, and JESTA has no start date, with a target of fiscal 2028. Do not pay any site for an approval now.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it for a first trip?
Not on a Tokyo to Osaka line. Tickets for every train on the route came to about ¥43,000, while the 14-day pass is ¥80,000 and does not cover the Nozomi or Hakone.
When is the best time to visit Japan?
It depends on what you will trade. Late March to early April has blossom and the biggest crowds, 29 Apr to 5 May is Golden Week, and October to November is quieter with autumn colour.
