Travel documents for US citizens in 2027: every rule
Passport, REAL ID, trusted-traveller cards and the entry permits for Europe, the UK, Korea, Japan and Thailand, with cost and status as of 30 Oct 2026.
For a 2027 trip, an American needs a passport with enough validity, one entry permit that is already live (the UK ETA), and nothing else for most of the rest. Europe’s ETIAS, Japan’s JESTA and Korea’s K-ETA are either undated, years away or unconfirmed for 2027, and none of them can be bought today. What you can act on now is the passport, because a renewal takes weeks, and the REAL ID card for domestic flights.
| Rule | Cost | Status on 30 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| US passport renewal | $130 adult book, plus $60 to expedite | 4 to 6 weeks routine, 2 to 3 expedited, plus mail each way |
| REAL ID (domestic flights) | Set by your state | Enforced since 7 May 2025; 5 May 2027 ends the phase-in |
| Global Entry / TSA PreCheck / Mobile Passport Control | $120 / $79.75 to $85 / free | Available now; the interview wait is the real cost |
| Europe EES (fingerprints) | Free | Fully live since 10 Apr 2026; 90 days in any 180 |
| Europe ETIAS | €20, about US$22 | No start date; not in operation |
| UK ETA | £20, about $27 | Required since 8 Jan 2025; boarding refused without it since 25 Feb 2026 |
| Korea K-ETA | ₩10,000, about US$7 | Americans exempt to 31 Dec 2026; 2027 not announced |
| Japan JESTA | Not set | Law passed; target fiscal 2028, limit 31 Mar 2029 |
| Thailand TDAC | Free | Mandatory; 30 days visa-free since 15 Sep 2026; 450-baht fee not started |
| Mexico advisory | None | Level 2 nationally; state levels run 1 to 4 |
Before you book
Two documents have lead times that the others do not. A passport can be refused at check-in even when it is valid, because countries set their own minimum: 3 months after you leave for Schengen, 6 months after you arrive for Thailand and most of Asia. And a plain driver’s licence no longer gets you through a US airport checkpoint, which matters for a spring trip to Puerto Rico more than one to Paris.
If the trip is before July 2027, renew before the end of the year. If you fly abroad more than once in five years, work out which trusted-traveller card pays for itself before the interview queue gets long.
- US passport renewal time right now, and the six-month rule (from 12 Nov): current processing times, who can renew online, urgent appointments and the validity rule by region.
- REAL ID: what actually changes on 5 May 2027 (from 5 Nov): what the date means, what counts instead of a REAL ID, and why passports never needed one.
- Global Entry vs TSA PreCheck in 2027, and the free option (from 1 Dec): which of the three fits how you fly, and how Enrollment on Arrival skips the interview wait.
Tell me your passport’s expiry date and the countries on the trip, and I’ll check each one against its own validity rule, not a generic six months. If a renewal is needed I’ll say so before you book flights.
Europe: the border and the permit
Europe has two systems, and they are easy to blur. The Entry/Exit System is live now: your fingerprints and photo are taken on first entry, nobody is stamped, and the computer counts your 90 days in any 180. ETIAS is the €20 permit that has no start date, so there is nothing to apply for and anyone selling one is not the EU. If your trip is January to June 2027, plan for a slow first hour at the border and nothing more.
The 90/180 count is shared across 29 countries, and arrival and departure days both count. It only bites on a long trip or a summer stacked on an earlier visit, but since April the border enforces it exactly.
- ETIAS has no start date. What to do for a 2027 Europe trip (from 2 Nov): what the EU has and has not said, the fee, who is exempt, and why to ignore sellers.
- EES, ETIAS and your Europe trip: what changes in 2026: the two systems told apart, queue history and how to shape arrival day.
- EES fingerprints at the EU border: what it looks like now (from 15 Nov): the desk, the worst airports, the pre-registration app and what to carry.
- The Schengen 90/180 rule, explained with a calendar (from 15 Nov): the rolling window counted on real dates, plus the official calculator.
The EES check happens at your first Schengen airport, not your last. A 90-minute connection at Frankfurt onto a flight to Italy is now a gamble, so clear the border at the gateway and start the itinerary at the second airport.
Asia and the UK
The UK is the only permit on this list you must hold today. The ETA is £20, takes most people a day or less in the app, and lasts two years. A layover needs one only if you pass UK passport control, and the airside exemption at Heathrow and Manchester is described as current, not permanent.
Korea and Japan are the two to watch. Americans skip the K-ETA until 31 Dec 2026, and the answer for 2027 usually arrives in the last week of December, so a January landing deserves a plan. JESTA is further off: the law is passed, but there is no fee, no site and no date before fiscal 2028. Thailand is the one that already changed, to 30 days visa-free for arrivals from 15 Sep 2026, with a free arrival card to fill in up to three days ahead.
- The UK ETA for US citizens: £20, the app, and who is exempt (from 7 Nov): cost, steps, the layover rule and why dual citizens cannot get one.
- K-ETA for Americans: still exempt in 2026, unclear for 2027 (from 24 Nov): what is confirmed, what to do by arrival date, and the free e-Arrival card.
- JESTA, Japan’s travel authorisation: when it starts (from 23 Nov): what the law sets, what it leaves open, and why nobody should pay yet.
- Thailand TDAC: the free arrival card and the new 30-day limit (from 20 Nov): the card, the shorter stay, how to extend and where the 450-baht fee stands.
On the ground
Entry paperwork is only half of a safe trip. For Mexico there is no permit to file, but the State Department rates every state separately, and the level tells you how careful to be rather than whether to go. Cancún, Mexico City, Oaxaca and Los Cabos are all Level 2. Six states are Level 4, and none is a normal holiday destination.
- Mexico travel advisory 2026: what the levels mean for you (from 10 Nov): the state-by-state table and what Level 2 means in practice for taxis, buses and night travel.
Do I need ETIAS to travel to Europe in 2027?
Not today. The EU has named no start date and cannot take applications. It has promised several months of notice, so check travel-europe.europa.eu about three months before you fly.
Which of these do I have to do before a 2027 trip?
Check your passport validity for every country, get the UK ETA if you are going there, and complete Thailand’s free arrival card. For a January landing in Korea, check the K-ETA exemption in late December.
Do I need a REAL ID to fly abroad?
No. You need a passport, and a REAL ID cannot be used for international travel. A valid passport also works as ID at domestic checkpoints, so a passport holder has never needed a REAL ID to fly.
