Thanksgiving 2026 travel: the days to fly and the day to avoid
Thanksgiving is Thu 26 Nov 2026. TSA's 2025 numbers show the busiest days, why the Sunday after is the worst in its history, and the quiet days to book.
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November in 2026. If you can choose your flights, fly out on Thanksgiving morning itself and come home on Tuesday 1 December, and do not fly on Sunday 29 November. That is not a hunch. TSA publishes how many people it screens every day, and the 2025 numbers make the pattern plain: Thanksgiving Day is the quietest day of the week by a mile, and the Sunday after is the busiest day the agency has ever had.
The busiest travel days of Thanksgiving week, by the numbers
TSA counts everyone who passes a checkpoint, so its daily totals are the cleanest measure of how crowded US airports are. Here is Thanksgiving week 2025.

Thanksgiving was Thursday 27 November 2025. Sunday 30 November set the all-time record.

Three things jump out. The Wednesday before, which everyone calls the busiest travel day, was not even the busiest day of its own week; the Friday a week out beat it. Thanksgiving Day carried 1.56 million people, barely more than half of Wednesday’s 2.75 million. And the Sunday after, at 3.13 million, was the highest single-day total in TSA’s history, ahead of the 3.09 million of June 2025. The Sunday after Thanksgiving 2024 had hit 3.09 million too. This is a pattern, not a spike.

Thanksgiving morning is the trick most people won’t use because it feels like missing the day. You don’t. A 07:00 departure lands you in time for a 15:00 dinner in most of the country, through an airport running at half speed. The Friday after is the second quiet day, at 2.39 million last year, good for coming home from a short trip or leaving for a long one.
Coming home, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving ran 2.23 million last year against 3.13 million on the Sunday. That is 900,000 fewer people in the same terminals. If you can work remotely on Monday, take the Tuesday.
Give me where you’re going and whether you can work from there on Monday, and I’ll draft the long weekend around a Thursday-out, Tuesday-home shape, with the family dinner pinned so nothing I suggest clashes with it.
When to be at the airport on the busy days
TSA does not publish an arrival-time rule. Its FAQ says the right time varies by airport and date, tells you to ask your airline, and reminds you to allow for parking, check-in and the walk to the checkpoint on top of screening. What it does offer is the MyTSA app, which uses historical data to estimate how busy your airport is likely to be at your day and hour. On a Sunday that moves 3 million people, check it the night before and again at breakfast.
If you fly more than twice a year, PreCheck (from 1 Dec) is the single biggest change you can make to a holiday airport. Enrolment is a short online form and a ten-minute appointment, and TSA says about 99% of PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes. Starting now may not get you through before this Thanksgiving, but it should for Christmas.
The one thing to do the night before
Open your airline app and look at the boarding pass. If you have PreCheck, it must say so, with an indicator like TSA PRE or TSAPRECHK. If it doesn’t, your Known Traveler Number is missing from the reservation, and TSA will not let you in the PreCheck lane on the strength of your card. Add the number in the app, re-issue the pass, and check again. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure on most carriers, Delta among them, so the night before is exactly when this is possible.
REAL ID enforcement began on 7 May 2025. If your licence does not have the star, bring a passport or another acceptable ID. TSA now charges travellers without acceptable ID a $45 fee to verify their identity, and on the busiest Sunday of the year that queue is the last place you want to be.
While the app is open, do the food check. Gravy, cranberry sauce, jam and wine over 3.4 ounces go in a checked bag, which is TSA’s own holiday list. The leftover you can’t carry on is the one in a jar.
AAA counted a record 81.8 million Americans travelling over Thanksgiving 2025, about 6.1 million by air, and nothing suggests 2026 will be quieter. The airports will be full whatever you do. The point is to be in them on the days they are a little less full. If the long weekend is the start of something bigger, say two weeks in Japan, the same rule applies. Leave on the Thursday.
Is Thanksgiving Day a busy day to fly?
No. It is the quietest day of the week. TSA screened 1.56 million people on Thanksgiving Day 2025 against 2.75 million the day before and 3.13 million on the Sunday after.
What is the busiest travel day after Thanksgiving?
The Sunday. On 30 November 2025 TSA screened 3.13 million people, the most in its history, and the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2024 had set the previous record. In 2026 that day is Sunday 29 November.
When should I travel home after Thanksgiving?
Friday 27 November or Tuesday 1 December 2026. In 2025 the equivalent days carried 2.39 and 2.23 million people, the two lowest non-holiday totals of the week.
Is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving the busiest travel day?
Not in 2025. The Wednesday before carried 2.75 million people, fewer than the Friday a week earlier at 2.79 million and well short of the Sunday after. It is busy, but it is not the day to fear.
